One of the most common questions we hear from parents is, “When should my child see an orthodontist?” The short answer: by age 7. That doesn’t mean your child will need braces at 7. It means an orthodontist can spot developing bite or jaw issues early, while there’s still time to guide growth.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. Here’s why that timing matters and what to expect.
Why Age 7?
Around age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The first permanent molars have usually come in, which establishes how the back teeth bite together. At this stage, an orthodontist can see:
- Whether there is enough room for the adult teeth that are still coming in
- How the upper and lower jaws are growing in relation to each other
- Crossbites, deep bites, open bites, and underbites that may be easier to address during growth
- Habits such as thumb-sucking that may be affecting the teeth
Signs Your Child Should See an Orthodontist Sooner
You don’t have to wait for a birthday. Consider scheduling a visit if you notice:
- Baby teeth lost very early or very late
- Crowded, gapped, or misplaced teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing or snoring
- Jaws that shift, click, or look uneven
- Front teeth that stick out or don’t meet when your child bites down
Most Kids Don’t Need Treatment Right Away
This is the part many parents find reassuring. At a first visit, the most common outcome is simply monitoring. We’ll check in periodically as your child grows and recommend treatment only if and when it will help.
When early care does make sense, it’s usually called Phase 1 treatment. It may involve an appliance such as a palatal expander to guide jaw growth. You can read more about it on our early orthodontic treatment page.
What Happens at Your Child’s First Orthodontic Visit
At Ellis Orthodontics, the first visit is free and designed to be low-pressure. Dr. Len Ellis or Dr. Simona Lekht will:
- Talk with you and your child about any concerns
- Examine the teeth, bite, and jaw growth
- Take digital images if needed
- Explain what they see in plain language and whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all
Most kids are surprised by how easy it is. We keep things friendly and fun, and we answer every question before you leave.
How to Prepare Your Child for the Visit
A little preparation goes a long way. Let your child know the visit is just a check-up, with no shots and no drills. Bring a list of questions, any recent dental X-rays if your dentist has them, and your insurance card. Younger kids often like knowing they’ll get to see pictures of their own teeth on the screen. Afterward, your child can go right back to school or activities.
Early Checks Can Make Later Treatment Simpler
Catching a problem during growth can sometimes shorten or simplify treatment down the road. Even if your child won’t need braces for years, knowing the plan early helps you prepare. When the time comes, our kids braces and teen options are designed around busy family schedules.
